About the 2022-23 Africa Summit

The 2023 Africa Summit in Colorado will explore the challenges and successes in nurturing a democratic culture both in Africa and at home. We will learn alongside those who have been building democracy and facing the challenges of the continent's most neglected conflicts.

While we grapple with growing threats around the world, it is easy to miss the daunting challenges to democracy that have been mounting on the African continent.

Would-be dictators are exploiting military intervention, social divisions, disinformation, and political apathy to end the promise of democracy. For an eyeopener on some of these conflicts in Africa -- the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, South Sudan, Chad, Ethiopia, Mali, Sudan, Nigeria, and Burundi – that might have missed your newsfeed, see this report from DW News.

Africa Agenda believes that we must act to reinforce democratic culture both in Africa and at home. It is, perhaps, common today to witness an explosion of online activism directed at authoritarian or autocratic regimes. But it is hard to know what is true or what the real challenges are.

Keynote Speaker

Dr. Simon Munzu

Dr Simon Munzu is a Cameroonian political activist and democratic governance campaigner. He is known internationally for his decades-long advocacy in favour of the re-establishment of a federal system of government and cessation of the domination, marginalisation, and assimilation of English-speaking Cameroonians by the Francophone-led governing elites. This, he argues, is the most suitable pathway to resolving the Anglophone problem, ending the ongoing armed conflict in the Anglophone regions, and preserving the unity of Cameroon. He currently serves as chair of the Steering Committee of the Coalition of Cameroon Federalist Groups and Activists (CCFGA), a civil society organisation that he co-founded in September 2021 to campaign for federalism in his home country.

Dr Munzu is a highly regarded professional with a wealth of leadership, management, administrative, academic, judicial, human rights, political, and programming experience. His career of more than 30 years at the national and international levels spanned various disciplines across several organisations. It included service as a senior official of the United Nations in increasingly higher posts of responsibility at field and headquarters locations in the areas of human rights, sustainable human development, peace and security, peace-keeping, as well as post-conflict peace-building, peace consolidation, and recovery. Prior to joining the United Nations, he worked in his home country, Cameroon, as an academic, attorney/barrister, human rights defender, and civil society organiser. Read More
